Literature Text

Mercy Anne Sullivan was laid to rest two days later.

All of the papers and media called her a hero. Sam's father had barged into the ER drunk, brandishing a pistol and yelling that he was going to take his baby girl home one way or another.

The charge nurse had initiated the lockdown which is what had caused Mercy and the police officer to take off running. Sam's father had shot the officer in the chest and had inadvertently given Mercy the opportunity to run back and warn Neil.

Sam's father had barged down the hall towards her room where he had encountered Mercy. The young nurse had tried to talk him down but the man wasn't going to listen. They had struggled for several minutes before he threw Mercy against the wall and kicked in Sam's door.

Mercy had run after him and he turned and fired the pistol, catching her right below her ribcage. The police officer had a Kevlar vest to protect him, Mercy didn't.

Everyone had flown back for Mercy's funeral but Neil barely registered their presence. He couldn't believe that she was gone.

Mercy's sacrifice had given the staff enough time to subdue Sam's father and in the end she had saved both Neil and Sam's lives. But right now Neil didn't care. He just wanted to wake up from this nightmare and have Mercy in his arms once more.

Sam held Neil's hand during the service and he took comfort in the little girl's presence. One of her aunt's had offered to take her in and Neil was grateful that she didn't have to go to a foster family.

After the funeral Neil went for a walk and found himself back at the hospital. He took the elevator to the nursery and felt his throat tighten when he remembered standing in the hall with Mercy in his arms after she had helped bring a new life into the world.

He glanced up to see a nurse carry a brand new baby girl into the nursery. She placed a pink cap on the child's head, covering the few wisps of raven black hair. After placing her in the bassinet the nurse walked away and Neil went to stand in front of the child. The baby blinked open her eyes and Neil was shocked at their brilliant green hue.

The nurse returned a moment later and placed a card with the child's name on the bassinet. A sob left Neil's throat when he saw the name on the card.

"Mercy."
We have reached the end of our saga. Remember, I never promised a happy ending.

Thank you all for reading and I hope the ending wasn't too confusing. I'm terrible at endings!
